How are breathlessness, fatigue and anxiety linked

Breathlessness, fatigue and anxiety are three things I see very commonly in my practice. Often people experience one, two or all three of these conditions, even if they come for help with just one in particular.

What lots of people don’t realise is that the effects they’re experiencing are related. You see, these three symptoms are very closely interlinked.

The link with chronic illness

Breathlessness, fatigue and anxiety are all very common symptoms reported by people living with chronic illness as well as those undergoing treatment for cancer.

They’re commonly seen together because each one of these symptoms feeds off and triggers another. For example, long-term anxiety can cause chronic shallow breathing, breathlessness and hyperventilation. Breathlessness in itself can be scary and upsetting, resulting in stress. Stress and anxiety can impact on our energy levels – and but they can also be caused by fatigue itself because of the frustration it brings.

Often patients feel trapped in a vicious cycle situation, feeling they’ll never be able to alleviate the symptoms and lead a normal life.

Breathlessness, anxiety and fatigue CAN be treated

Despite what some might say, it’s absolutely possible to alleviate these symptoms and improve your quality of life. Lots of patients feel hopeless as they’ve exhausted the limited options available to them – but there’s more you can do to alleviate the impact of breathlessness, anxiety and fatigue and get back to feeling more like yourself again.

Combining clinical and holistic approaches

I find that taking a mixed clinical and holistic approach can be of real benefit to patients. I often combine very clinical physiotherapy exercise, techniques and coping strategies with holistic therapies such as aromatherapy and reflexology, and energy therapies such as reiki and crystal healing. When these treatments are administered together we tend to see the most remarkable results.

Recently I decided to explore and train in NLP therapy after I experienced its life-changing benefits for myself. In the last few months I’ve been seeing amazing results with patients struggling with breathlessness, fatigue and anxiety through adding in some NLP techniques and Time Line Therapy®.

How can NLP help with these symptoms?

NLP works through connecting with the unconscious mind to break down negative beliefs that may be manifesting themselves as physical symptoms or causing pain and fatigue. Unlike other types of therapy patients don’t need to go over anything painful or talk about their feelings extensively – instead, we focus on identifying those beliefs and replacing them with a fresh, healthy mindset.
